Second International Symposium on Catholicism

An Opportunity of God’s Grace.

My Dear Archbishops and Bishops,

Monsignor and Priests, Sisters and Deacon, Ladies and Gentlemen,

They were nice days, spent together. There is that psalm which you all know: “How nice it is to be together Brothers and Sisters. It is like oil flowing on the beard of Aaron, carrying with it a soothing effect.” Having one mind and one heart we put our heads together to forge the new prongs for the Catholic Church of to-morrow. We have already begun to live the Church of to-morrow as soon as the meeting was over.

It was a joy to hear the names of Peter and Paul, as approved leaders of our Movement.

This is how genuine we are in our aims of setting up a Prelature which gives honor and glory to the out-standing Apostles “St. Peter and Paul Catholic Prelature.” We learn the following from St. Peter:

“Your minds, then must be sober and ready for action, put all your hope in the grace brought to you by the revelation of Jesus Christ. Do not allow yourselves to be shaped by the passions of your old ignorance, but as obedient children, be yourselves holy in all your activity, after the model of the holy one who calls us, since Scripture says:“Be holy, for I am holy.”(St. Peter 1:13-16) Such writing of St. Peter was taken as literally applying to us, who had been made to believe that we were holy, because we were celibate. But it is the more meaningful and demanding on us to-day married priests. Because this holiness is now to be fully shared in our families. As we married, the priestly holiness, touched the outer members of the mystical body, the community we serve.

Then St. Paul, in the letter to the Philippians has the following for us: “Have the same thoughts, sharing the same love, and being one in soul and mind. Do not do anything from selfish ambition, or from a cheap desire to boast, but be humble towards each other, never thinking you are better than others. And look out for each others interests, not just for your own.”(Phil. 2:2b-4).

Even if we were only to live on these two scripture quotations from the patrons of our Prelature, we would have enough for our meditations for many days. How freely we shared the discussions. How we valued each one’s contribution. How we felt the importance of each one of us. Let these not be just memories which will come and go away, and easily to be forgotten. Each one’ presence had a value, that is how we made a mystical body, coming from different countries, with different cultural apparatus, but finding ourselves aiming at the same welfare for ourselves and for the whole Church of Jesus Christ. “Ubi caritas est, Deus ibi est,” where there is love, God is there.“Certainly God was among us.”

Encouraging those who have already a service to offer to the community, let them educate their community on what we are: “Roman Catholic married Priests.” We have to assure them that we never lost our priesthood, we have only publicly reassumed our pastoral work.

Aware of the enormous task of a priest to-day, we would like to involve as much as we can the faithful, and invite those who feel they too can fully dedicate themselves to serve the community. We must never hide that striving for holiness is for each one of us in our status and environment.

We all have to be holy, God does not expect it to be less than that.

Holiness is the nature of God’s children, which we are. It is not something to boast of, it is both a duty and obligation.

If we don’t strive at holiness, we are denying the nature of the one who dwells in us, the Holy Spirit. We are ashaming God, whom we call “Our Father.” We are not the imitators of Jesus Christ, whose name we bear, that we are Christians. In all sincerity and honesty by our Christian Vocation, which we have accepted with joy, we ought to live accordingly, by being what we are called to be: “Be holy because I am holy.”

We shall renew the Church, if we shall truly be “The salt of the earth, the light to the world, and the yeast in the world.” It is time to be it.

To come back to the original nature of our Catholic Church, to become the true disciples of Jesus Christ. We are priests, known in other words: “Alter Christus” another Christ.

May God bless you all.

Yours Sincerely,

Arch. E. Milingo.

The closing day of the International Symposium on Catholicism Today and the Pilgrimage to Rome of Married Priests
18th June, 2007, Graduate School of Theology
Silver Town

The closing day of the International Symposium on Catholicism Today and the Pilgrimage to Rome of Married Priests

The foreseen meeting of the Bishops of the Prelature of Married Priests Now was replaced by a working breakfast, since some of the participants to the symposium were to leave after breakfast. So we all present, the remaining group made a sufficient representative group to deal with the last concluding item. It was the Pilgrimage to Rome.

The Pilgrimage to Rome of Married Priests

All the members present agreed on three reasons for the justification of the Pilgrimage:

1. It should be a world-wide and ecumenical convention. All the denominations who confess the one, Catholic, Apostolic Church, and have married priesthood.

2. All Catholic denominations who accept St. Peter as the consecrated and anointed Head of the Catholic Church, now headed by the Holy Father, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.

3. To gather in Rome as from 6th to 8th December, 2007. Concluding the pilgrimage with a Solemn Mass on the 8th December, the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the Mother of Jesus.

Though at the beginning of this concluding item of the symposium it was announced that we had six months to prepare for the pilgrimage, we found out that we had only four months. It was decided that the concluding date for the intake of the participants of the pilgrimage should end on 14th November, 2007. Since the arrival date is 6th December, and December is not a full month, nor is November. That is why we have only four months and half for preparation.

The Climax of the Pilgrimage

There will be the renewal of marriage vows, as well as of priestly vows. Those who will not afford to have their wives with them let them have photos of their spouses, even those whose wives died. They will be in mind and spirit with their spouses. This is the era of married priesthood, reinstating each priest present in his right and proper position in the church.

The renewal of vows and the blessing and anointing of marriage will be the dedication of the priests' families to restore them to their proper position as ideal families intended by God. The first miracle performed by Jesus took place at a celebration of the first blessed marriage, before the eyes of the disciples of Jesus, the twelve Apostles. They witnessed the greatness of marriage and its holiness, and dignity.

We expect to be presented blessings by the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI, True Father and Mother, Rev. Moon. The married priests need the blessing of both of them. This expected presence of the two important figures will mean a lot in the world in which we are living.

May God Bless our endeavors.

Milingo Responds to Benedict XVI on Celibacy

For Immediate Release November 16, 2006

Washington , DC . Archbishop Milingo and the Married Priests Now! Prelature concur with the Holy Father and the Vatican finding that reaffirms celibacy according to prelature spokesman, Archbishop Peter Paul Brennan.  “Where we disagree,” said Brennan, “is in the enforcement of celibacy as a job requirement for the priesthood. Celibacy should be a freely chosen charism and not a job requirement. Not every priest has the charism to be celibate and this is the problem because the church forces it on him or he cannot be ordained. It is a requirement that violated human freedom.”

We can hardly believe that a meeting of the Cardinals who head the Dicasteries was called to simply reaffirm celibacy.  The report that was not released is the important one.

What did the Cardinals say about a married priesthood?  Is the Vatican in such a state of denial that it cannot see the need for a married priesthood?

“The Vatican ’s denial of the problem confirms and encourages our mission to recall married priests to full ministry,” said Archbishop Milingo.  “We are the only Catholic diocese calling for the ordination of married men, and for the return of married priests to full ministry, Milingo said.

“Marriage is a sacrament of the church, celibacy is not.  Marriage is higher calling than celibacy. The marriage vow trumps the celibacy promise.  Our prelature believes that a married priest is a healthier priest, and that a married priesthood will give priests a healthy and proper outlet for their sexuality.  We are created by God as sexual beings and our sexuality needs to be celebrated as a blessing for ourselves and our wives. Marriage needs to be the normal option for priests,” Brennan said.

Married Priests Now! Prelature will hold a confernce in Parsippany , NJ on December 8-10 to celebrate marriage and the priesthood.  We will have a Catholic renewal of marriage vows during the celebration of the Eucharist for married priests and their wives.

Married priests can contact dvferrabolli@ verizon.net for conference details.

In St. Peter’s Square yesterday, a cleric was quoted in the news as saying that those priests who walked away from the priesthood to marry should not be received back as priests.  Our prelature reminds such clergymen that the Gospel of Jesus is about forgiveness.  And we remind him that the church is dying for want of priests.  Recalling the married priests is a wholesome remedy to help save the church.  The first priests called by Christ were married and the church has always had married priests.   “We are going back to the New Testament roots of the priesthood when St. Peter and the apostles were married,” said Milingo.

Married Priests Now: one big family

MarriedPriestsNow: one big family

(foto: P.A. Beltrami)

The Married Priests Now! Convocation has just concluded but not ended. It will be continued with other convocations, newsletters and local gatherings. The focal point of the MPN! convocation were the three Eucharistic Liturgies which called the priests to celebrate the married priesthood. Priests and their wives celebrated their marriages and the priesthood. It was a celebration of love for one another and for the church. For many it was the first time they had celebrated the Eucharist for a long time, and It became an epiphany-event for many as they lifted themselves up in hope and joy to see the current and future church with a restored married priesthood.

The speakers enhanced the convocation with thoughtful and provocative lectures which encouraged the idea of a restored married priesthood. At the opening dinner, Peter Paul Brennan spoke of the need for a married priesthood and set the theme of the conference as a celebration of the married priesthood. Brennan said that the only goal of our Married Priests Now! was the restoration and the recall of married priests to full ministry in the church. He introduced Archbishop Stallings who greeted the assembly and introduced Archbishop Milingo. +Emmanuel Milingo and his wife greeted the participants and told the story of their marriage. Milingo gave an enthusiastic call for the church to recognize its own married priests and for married preists to join together in unity.

On the second day, Dr. Anthony Padovano gave a clear and practical analysis of ministry and the suitable theology of the renewed married priesthood. Dr. Leonard Swidler spoke of the way to restore a married priesthood through a change in the laws because such a change was the only permanent and long lasting method. It must be written into church law.
After lunch, Archbishop Milingo gave a spirited response to the letter of Cardinal Re which threatened him with suspension for continued work with Married Priests Now! Archbishop Milingo said that he is and remains a Roman Catholic archbishop and will always be, but that he will continue to work with married priests because the church has treated them so badly that they need to experience some Christian love and experience. If the institutional church fails to do it, he in good conscience must extend the hand and embrace of love to the married priests. He was followed by Peter Manseau who spoke of the children of married priests from his perspective of growing up in a married priest family which he has written about in his book Vows. Manseau spoke of the sense of loss that is part of the ethos of the family of a married priest and how children experience it. Dr. Sal Trozzo gave few incites into developing communities and future church forms.

In the evening Archbishop Brennan facilitated an open session for priests and their wives to tell their stories and to tell about ministries they have developed. Many of the international married priests told of their ministries and continuing work as married priests. The Independent Catholic Apostolic Church of Brazil which has 5,000 married priests was represented by Bishop Edson Luis Campos da Silva, a former Capuchin priest. He was accompanied by Fr. Marcelo Pires. Pietro Ceroni and Dr. Giuseppe Serrone, with his wife Albana, came from Italy. Other international priests came from Peru, Paraguay, Africa, Mexico, and Canada.

The third day began with a special Eucharistic Celebration of Healing in which the priests and bishops extended raised hands to one another to offer healing from the injuries caused by the institutional brutality of the Church and the hierarchy towards married priests. Archbishop Milingo pointed out that the Eucharist is the heart of the priests ministry and that each priest should keep the blessed sacrament reserved in his family home chapel. He spoke of his own devotion to the Eucharist and of its role in the life of the priests, their families and the church.
The next session was an ecumenical sharing of the ministries of the American Clergy Leadership Conference, the Federation of Peace and the role of marriage and family. The convocation was funded by the American Clergy Leadership Conference and by contributions from other churches. Rev. Michael Jenkins, President of ACLC, Dr. Chang Shik Yang, and Rev. Phillip Schanker who told the story of Maria Sung Milingo's encounter with the Vatican.

The final luncheon featured Archbishop Milingo who gave a farewell comments and thanked all the priests who came to share this special celebration of the married priesthood. Brennan read the MPN response to Cardinal Re's letter, gave a few comments and invited the participants to keep in contact through the website and the E-group. Archbishop Stallings introduced Archbishop Patrick Trujillo who gave a keynote talk on the Future of the Married Priesthood and suggested conference resolutions.
The most significant benefit of this convocation was that married-priests celebrated mass together and experience priestly fellowship with their wives and with the assembled community. The exchange of experiences and the meeting of other priests and bishops brought great hope for a real change in church law and policy. Married priests ought to be recalled. The Pastoral Provision given for Lutheran and Episcopal Church ministers needs to be extended to include the Church's own married priests.

Married Priests Now! Convocation
Saddle Brook, New Jersey - September 17 – 19, 2006

The married Roman Catholic Archbishop from Zambia, Emmanuel Milingo, is calling married Catholic priests to join his newly founded Married Priests Now! Movement. He is inviting not only married priests but also married men and women who want to be priests to a Celebration of the Married Priesthood. It will be held at the Holiday Inn Conference Center, in Saddle Brook, New Jersey on September 17-19, 2006. Each day will begin with a Mass concelebrated by 120 married priests. Married priests and their wives are coming from Peru, Brazil, Mexico, Italy and Canada, and from a dozen states. Archbishop Milingo encourages married priests to stand up for their rights and to make sure the American bishops know they are ready to serve in joy and gladness. Married priests who wish to attend can call Dario Ferrabolli at 1-973-332-2730. This special convocation will center on the single issue of having married priests called back to full ministerial service in the church. Speakers for the convocation are: Anthony Padovano, Leonard Swidler, Peter Manseau and Salvatore Trozzo. A married priesthood was the norm in the Roman Catholic Church for the first twelve centuries. St. Peter and thirty-eight other popes were married men. In several instances sons of married popes became pope also. The Eastern Rites of the Roman Catholic Church have always had married priests. So a married priesthood is nothing new but was actually the norm for the church for more than half of its existence. Archbishop Milingo says, “It is time for the Vatican to reinstate married priests into full and active ministry within the church. The Catholic Church is in a state of crisis because of the current priest shortage. Hundreds of parishes are closing each year and the people are going without the Eucharist.” The current average age of Roman Catholic priests is 74 years, and the average age of monks and nuns is 68. The church knows it has a dim future due to the shortage of priests. The Eucharist is the central teaching of Christianity and of the Roman Church. Without priests, there can be no Eucharist. Without the Eucharist, there is no church. Married Priests Now! is working toward the reconciliation of married priests and wants to identify married men who want to be priests, but who have been deterred by the mandatory celibacy issue. Roman Catholic dioceses are now so short of priests that they are appointing laymen and laywomen as canonical pastors of parishes. While this is a laudable and exciting sign of progress in church structure, it highlights the clear fact that there are not enough priests to be appointed as pastors. These elderly priests who are left are often pastors of two or three parishes. The people need more priests. With 25,000 married priests in the United States and approximately 130,000 world wide, there are plenty of already trained and ordained priests available to bring the Eucharist to the people. It is time to recall the married priest and help resolve the all too evident priest shortage. Peter P. Brennan E-mail: DDamdg@aol.com Phone: 516 485 0616
